What is Shabbat?

Shabbat is a day of rest and spiritual enrichment. The traditional Shabbat is ushered in by women and girls lighting Shabbat candles. Shabbat is the culmination of the week signifying a time of peace and increased light in the world. A festive mood is created by singing praises to G‑d, who commanded us to keep the Sabbath as one of the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai. The Shabbat meal follows on Friday evening, when family and friends get together for a leisurely dinner celebrating Shabbat in a warm, stimulating and enjoyable atmosphere. Shabbat is a day of both spiritual and physical renewal for all who observe it!
