What is Shabbat?

Shabbat is a day of rest and spiritual enrichment. The traditional Shabbat is ushered in by women and girls lighting Shabbat candles. Shabbat is the culmination of the week signifying a time of peace and increased light in the world. A festive mood is created by singing praises to G-d, who commanded us to keep the Sabbath as one of the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai. The Shabbat meal follows on Friday evening, when family and friends get together for a leisurely dinner celebrating Shabbat in a warm, stimulating and enjoyable atmosphere. Shabbat is a day of both spiritual and physical renewal for all who observe it!
